Created by our culinary educators and community members, each recipe features whole plant foods without oil and with minimal added sweeteners and salt. We're extending tremendous thanks to Jim Spellos, PPMNY Network Technology Advisor, and Hilary Agin, PPMNY Recipe Curator, for bringing this app to life!

The Future of Nutrition by T. Colin Campbell, PhDRenowned nutrition scientist and author Dr. T. Colin Campbell recently released The Future of Nutrition: An Insider's Look at the Science, Why We Keep Getting It Wrong, and How to Start Getting It Right, which explores the history of cancer research, our societal obsession with animal protein, the limitations of scientific findings, and recommendations for the future. After more than a half-century in the field, Dr. Campbell continues to bring provocative ideas to the table, challenging common knowledge and deftly explaining why whole food, plant-based nutrition is not already a mainstream lifestyle.

"...[A] local disease is one that attacks a particular part of the body and has a specific cause, and therefore can be dealt with precisely. Particularly, specificity, and precision are the key words here. Early proponents of the local theory of cancer believed that cancer was caused by isolated and identifiable agents such as wounds, bactera, parasites, and viruses. (Today, cancer researchers who focus on single gene mutations or single environmental toxins are reflecting these same principles.) The corollary of that belief was that cancer could be locally (and simply) treated. In the earliest days of this debate, "local" treatment meant surgery. It's easy to understand how this theory became popular. Surgeons occupy positions of prestige and power, and the simplicity of the theory appeals to our rational minds... On the other hand, the constitutional theory of cancer proposes that the disease has deeper origins, likely involving the complex pathways of metabolism that characterize nutrition's function." (pg. 50)

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, national nutrition leaders Neal Barnard, MD, and Columbus Batiste, MD, shared their research and vast experience addressing the health disparities among Black communities and how whole food, plant-based nutrition offers a path to healing -- and racial justice. Attendees also enjoyed a culinary demonstration, inspired by a traditional soul food recipe, with Chef Brandy Cochrane. Making a Difference with Our Local Health Care Workers

We just wrapped up our 14-Day Plant Powered Jumpstart for Health Care Workers, guiding 30 members of our local health care community in learning about the healing power of food as medicine and how to embrace a plant-based lifestyle. Participants took part in six engaging virtual sessions, got support from a stellar team of more than a dozen volunteer mentors, and learned new skills for their own health and for their clinical practice. Special thanks to all our collaborators, sponsors, and the passionate volunteers who made this experience possible!
 

"I was blown away by the Plant Powered Metro New York Jumpstart program. I was unsure what I signed up for at first, but feel so lucky I had this opportunity. The material covered was high-level and extremely thorough, rolled out in a well-designed sequence. The leaders and mentors were unbelievably knowledgeable and supportive; the lectures had the right blend of didactics and small-group participation; the peer support was priceless; the resources provided were extensive; the cooking demonstrations were exciting. I can't even believe the generosity of the one-on-one mentors who held our hands as we all worked to make the whole food, plant-based lifestyle our own. They not only helped us transition our personal eating pattern, but also planted a seed within us to pay it forward. Bravo!"

 

Northwell Journalist Explores Plant-Based Nutrition

"...I found it incredibly helpful (and easy) to create some of the more central components that go into most dishes, like vegetable stock. As I chopped, I tossed all my veggie scraps into a container on my counter. Once I had a few cups' worth stored up, I just dropped the contents into a slow cooker with water, put it on low, and voila! Twelve hours later I had vegetable stock with no salt or additives."

In December, Meghan Holmgren, Managing Editor at The Well by Northwell Health, took on a 14-day challenge with PPMNY to eat a whole food, plant-based diet, with the support of PPMNY Board Member and mentor, Wendy Sax. Read Meghan's story on how meal-prepping helped her stay on track and the mental and physical benefits she experienced. And, yes, it's important to ease into eating more beans!
