CELEBRATING NUTRITION THAT HEALS

Every March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics rolls out its National Nutrition Month® campaign to raise awareness of healthy eating and the profession of dietetics. While our Plant Powered community celebrates healthy eating -- always -- the campaign heralds National Nutrition Month logothe same nutritional messages that have failed to help people claim lifelong health or overcome disease.

This year's campaign logo features cheese and fish, and lean meats and low-fat dairy are included in many campaign recipes, tips, and videos. The recommendations to reduce sodium, sweeteners, and dietary fat are laudable, but they don't go far enough to prevent, arrest, and reverse disease

PPMNY is here to help you, our health-seeking local communities, discern among good, better, and best dietary advice. Yesterday, some incredible women in our 21-Day Plant Powered Jumpstart shared with us their early wins on day 12: waking up in the morning without pain or mucus, breathing clearer, experimenting with spices, and exercising new muscles in grocery shopping and label reading (yes, those vegan cheeses aren't health foods!). But perhaps most importantly they have gained hope and trust in dietary change that truly makes a difference for health. While it will take some time for National Nutrition Month® to acknowledge whole food, plant-based nutrition, we know we can get there when we work together to get educated and demonstrate the power of plants!

In health,

Lianna Levine Reisner, PPMNY Network Director
and our entire team

Plant Powered Book Club: Fast Food Genocide

  PLANT WISDOM

Later this month, our Plant Powered Book Club is discussing Dr. Joel Furhman's powerful book, written with Robert B. Phillips in 2017, Fast Food Genocide: How Processed Food is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It.

Here's a sneak preview: Fast Food Genocide book cover

"The brain is a living organ that is exquisitely dependent on nutrients... The evidence indicates that your emotional well-being, willpower, determination, work ethic, patience, concentration, creativity, memory, and intelligence all depend on   exposure to sufficient nutrients and healthy food throughout life...." (p. 42)

"Ordinarily, an inadequate diet would be quickly evident and detected because of accompanying severe physical symptoms. However, modern fast foods are specifically designed to deceive human metabolism by limiting these outward symptoms. Commercial foods are fortified with vitamins and enriched just enough to keep us from displaying or dying from an acute deficiency, but they do not have the vast array of nutrients and phytochemicals that are needed to enable our brains to develop and function normally...." (p. 43)

"What if we could create a nutritional advantage for every single American? By harnessing the power of social energy and making high-nutrient foods universally available, we can give every person a nutritional advantage. This in turn would enable everyone to rise above his or her circumstances and overcome life’s adversities. This potential requires altruism, compassion, empathy, and knowledge." (p. 148)
